Who we are
MapleBallot is an independent iOS app designed and developed by SecurityGeek.io, based in Vancouver, Canada. It is unofficial and not affiliated with Elections Canada, the House of Commons, any provincial or territorial election authority, any political party or the Government of Canada.
What the backend stores
MapleBallot reads election data through its own backend so the app does not hit the authorities' sites directly. That backend stores, per installation:
- A random installation identifier generated on your device. It is not your Apple ID, device serial or advertising identifier.
- Your language (English or French) and app version, so alerts arrive in the right language.
- The electoral events and ridings you follow and your notification preferences, so it knows what to alert you about.
- If you enable notifications, an Apple Push Notification token. The token is deleted when you turn notifications off or delete the app.
We do not collect your name, email, phone number, contacts, advertising identifiers, voter registration, date of birth, political affiliation, precise location or the addresses you type. The backend keeps standard request logs for up to 30 days for reliability; they contain IP addresses as any web server's logs do, and are not used to profile anyone.
Data stored on your device
- Your saved riding and followed ridings.
- Language, appearance and notification settings.
- A cache of the last results, standings, scheduled votes and polls, so the app opens with data before it refreshes.
- If iOS records a crash, a diagnostic report from Apple's MetricKit. It stays on your device unless you choose to share it from About → Diagnostics.
Deleting the app removes all of it.
Location and addresses
Finding your riding is optional. If you tap Use my current location, iOS asks for one-time permission, and the app matches your coordinates against the riding boundaries bundled inside the app. The coordinates never leave your phone. If you type an address or postal code instead, the app sends only that text to Open North's Represent API to resolve the riding, and does not store it.
Network sources
The app and its backend read public data over HTTPS from:
- Elections Canada (election night results, Official Voting Results, riding boundaries under the Open Government Licence – Canada)
- The House of Commons (party standings)
- Provincial and territorial election authorities, for the votes they announce
- Open North's Represent API (riding lookup and provincial district boundaries)
- Wikipedia's polling tables (CC BY-SA) and the Angus Reid Institute's public releases, for the Polls screen
- Apple Maps, for the map itself, under Apple's own privacy terms
Those services have their own terms and privacy practices.
Notifications
Notifications are off until you enable them in Settings. When on, the backend sends push alerts about the ridings and votes you follow: counts starting, a lead changing, a count completing, a result being validated. They are informational, not official notices, and delivery is not guaranteed.
Permissions
- Location (optional, while using the app): only to find your riding on the device.
- Notifications (optional): only for alerts you choose.
MapleBallot does not request camera, microphone, contacts, photos or background location.
Children's privacy
MapleBallot collects no personal information from anyone, children or adults.
Your choices
Turn notifications off in Settings to have the push token deleted. Delete the app to remove everything on the device; the installation record on the backend is removed after 90 days without contact from the app. To have it removed sooner, email us with the installation identifier shown in Settings → About.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we will update the date above and post the new version at this URL.
